Tolewares

What is toleware?

Dictionary.com defines toleware simply as "articles made of tole." One popular definition of tole is elaborately painted enameled or lacquered metalware.

From these two definitions alone, it is almost impossible to render an interpretation that is consistent with common usage in different countries. Tole painting, at least in the United States, has come to also refer to a type of folk art style of painting. And toleware has come to be referred to as much to the style of painting that was popular on tole as it would to the metalware on which the decorative painting would occur. And the meaning of tole, toleware, and tole painting probably differ based on regional preference and teacher preference.
